#Musician Interview
We are already in the middle of spring. Today, we met musician ‘Luchmate,’ who approaches to the public in a friendly manner with their warm and spring-like vibe.
Let’s meet our third guest for “Musician Interview” and talk about their tips to be steadily loved by public, and also how they have maintained their teamwork for a long time.
Q. Nice to meet you, Lunchmate! Can you please introduce yourselves briefly to the readers?
A. Hello, everyone! We are ‘Luchmate’, producing team consisting of producer ‘Platz’, and pianist Lee Ji-Hye. We are currently uploading music at SellBuyMusic. We are specialized to acoustic, New Age style music and Lo-fi Jazz-hops, but we also compose many other genres.
Q. The name ‘Lunchmate’ sounds very unique. Can you tell us the meaning of your name?
A. We used to have lunch together in the middle of composing work. We thought our team name should be familiar to us, and also easy for the public. We hope people feel comfortable when they hear our team name.
Q. Your music fit very well especially with animal videos or Vlogs, because of its cute and cheerful melodies. Do you consider how the music is going to be used in videos while you are composing it?
A. We don’t usually limit the usage to animal videos or Vlogs when composing, but before we get down to work, we try to catch up YouTube trends by choosing references and having a conversation.
I usually watch YouTube a lot, so I share what I think are popular recently on YouTube with Ji-Hye, and watch videos together. While we watch some videos together, we think a lot about how to make music that can be used in these videos.
Q. Is there anything you care specifically a lot when you compose music?
A. As I mentioned, music sold on SellBuyMusic are usually used in YouTube or other video productions, so you can easily track down where your music is used in.
Plus, in my opinion people want music that has good quality, and that can be a special point to the video when it comes to editing. That’s why we try to make songs that have good qualities as TV production music do, while trying to make the genre as diverse as possible.
#Routine #Philosophy
Q. Do you have a routinized order when composing music?
A. First of all, we often share funny TV shows and YouTube videos with each other, and gather such ideas to prepare for the work. After the idea is agreed to some extent and either of us comes up with the code progress or the melody line, we move on to recording.
Ji-Hye plays the piano so well that I leave the overall part of the piano recording to Ji-Hye, and I record the rest of the instruments including rhythm instruments.
When the first sketch is completed, we continue to modify it while we are on the progress of final mixing and mastering. And then we fix an order to upload before we finally upload them. All of these works are carried out simultaneously, in parallel.
Q. Where do you usually get inspirations from?
A. I tend to search for references a lot. But before that, I usually record information such as which kind of videos are on trend now, or how people used certain music in a certain scene and how well they matched each other. I often bring it up while we talk about the future direction of work.
Q. How would you describe your music in a word?
A. Like what our team name suggests, if I have to describe our music in a word it would be ‘comfortableness’ that matches well with videos that you can watch while having a meal.
Q. What is your favorite among what you have uploaded on our website so far?
A. A song named “Playtime,” which gave us the first experience of making it on to the top of SellBuyMusic chart, is the most meaningful one to me. The music itself is very simple, but I was so touched when I first found out that many people were listening to and using our music. Until now, lots people are making a good use of this song! :)
#Platz #Season_of_Now
Q. You are currently also releasing songs as ‘Platz’ and ‘Season of Now.’ What would the be difference between composing full-length songs and composing a background music?
A. Maybe the difference is that my albums as a solo artist ‘Platz’ and group ‘Season of Now’ have a specific genre and audience to focus on.
Platz’s music is clearly directed as a music that expresses lyrical thoughts and sweet vibes of everyday life, and albums of ‘Season of Now’ are directed as a comfortable music that can be played while having a conversation with your families.
Background music, on the other hand, has to be more diverse in genres, and should be more general and familiar to public since we don’t know exactly where people will use our music. It can be difficult in some perspectives, but also easy in the others at the same time. (Composing works were never easy for me though…)
Q. What made you start selling Background music?
A. I have heard of 'SellBuyMusic' before a long time ago, but I became more interested when I saw the site being reorganized into a website for video music and music distribution.
Then one of my musician friends told me that he uploaded his music on the website. I was composing music constantly anyway, so I thought it would be good to distribute some of my time to SellBuyMusic and then shared this idea with Ji-Hye.
We started off light-heartedly, but people liked our music more than we expected. More than else, ‘SellBuyMusic’ is very musician-friendly, and its system is very easy and comfortable for me to distribute and manage music. That is why I decided to spend more time in composing music to upload on the website steadily.
Q. Is there any specific moment that was memorable or made you feel happy while selling BGM on the website?
A.
I feel happy when our music become listed on top chart often, and also when I notice more people are using our music in their YouTube videos.
Q. Could you recommend music that you think will fit the best for their videos to our website’s users?
A. I think all of our music goes well with videos. I am not boasting, because I try to consider how well the music will fit in the video when composing.
Specifically, songs named ‘looking out the window at a cup of cocoa’ and ‘I want to be a parisian’ are bossanova style music that might be useful to fashion YouTubers, no matter what season you are in. They are both instrumental music with cozy vibes, and I hope you guys make a good use of them. :)
#Secret_of_Popularity #Composing_Tips
Q. You have been uploading good music steadily. Can you share us some tips to compose a background music?
A. My tip is simply just working on it steadily. We think that it is better to set an environment that you can continue uploading songs constantly, rather than uploading all at once and just wait for response from the listeners. Steadiness will bring you good results such as increased number of listeners who like your songs.
Another tip might be watching trendy videos if you want to compose BGM. Please don’t turn off videos just because you are not interested.
It is important to watch them and ask yourself questions like : “Why do people like this? What point makes this video entertaining? What kind of role can my music play in this kind of videos?” to compose music that meets the trend and is unique at the same time.
I think the amount of work that can be steadily uploaded and decisions about music style considering what people demand should be made as quickly as possible.
Q. Some musicians are skeptic about earning money by composing music. What is your opinion about this issue?
A. Ji-Hye and I both think music is meaningless if no one listens to it. I’m not saying that it is not a good music if it is not loved by a large number of people. However, I think value of art that strike the code with many people is bigger than ones that do not move people’s feelings at all.
Music of Beethoven and Mozart are now known as classic, but back then those composers were artists who lived on love and sympathy of the public like idols and pop stars these days do.
Q. What is 2021’s plan for you, as a musician?
A. Lunchmate will continue to work as composers through SellBuyMusic. In 2021, however, we are planning to challenge more of new genres we haven’t tried, and more songs with vocals as well as instrumental music.
We are not yet sure about whether we are going to use the name ‘Lunchmate’ or create another one, but our goal is to be musicians who are more diverse, deeper in music, and can communicate with people through music.
Of course, we are now composing some new songs together including Platz’s new album tracks.
Q.For the last, what would you want to say to fans who love Lunchmate’s music?
A. Thank you for your love to our music. We will keep making songs loved by more people, until everyone says they want to use Lunchmate’s music.
.
Today we met and interviewed Lee Sang-Yoon, Lee Ji-Hye from Lunchmate. Having an interview, I really wanted to resemble the way they constantly study music and think from the perspective of the public. We are sure their constant work and deep philosophy will be the driving force for the other musicians.
SellBuyMusic will continue to support Lunchmate’s chemistry and fresh songs!!
If you liked this interview, why don't you listen to these songs by Lunchmate to enjoy the spring?
